Intel - Tizen OS v1.0 released

The Tizen Technical Steering Group says: “We are excited to announce Tizen 1.0 Larkspur, including the addition of new complimentary components, as well as source code that focuses on enhancing stability and performance”.

Tizen is a free, open source operating system for mobile devices. The Tizen OS is based on the Linux operating system (Linux Foundation) and represented in the industry by Tizen Association.

The operating system incorporates a number of modules such as network management from the MeeGo project, a combination of the mobile operating systems Moblin (created by Intel), and Maemo (created by Nokia). Development is currently led by Samsung and Intel (some former MeeGo developers also joined this effort).

The Tizen OS software framework for third-party developers is based on web standards such as HTML5 and other web technologies. It is designed for use in tablets, netbooks, smartphones, smart TV, and in-vehicle infotainment systems.

Tizen’s software development kit is published by Samsung under a restrictive proprietary license (link below) and includes a web integrated development environment, emulator, compilation toolchain, sample code and documentation.
